Body-Safe Materials, Explained

Body-Safe Materials, Explained

"Body-safe" is one of the most repeated phrases in this category, and one of the least explained. Here's what it actually refers to.

What makes a material body-safe

The short version: non-porous, non-toxic, and free of chemicals that leach out over time or irritate skin and mucous membranes. In practice, this usually means medical-grade or platinum-cured silicone, ABS plastic, or glass.

What to be wary of

Porous materials (some jellies, rubbers, or unspecified "skin-safe" blends) can harbour bacteria in ways that no amount of cleaning fully resolves. If a listing can't tell you the exact material, that's worth asking about directly.

How to actually check

Ask the brand for the specific material name, not just the phrase "body-safe." A brand that can answer specifically, silicone grade, hardness, any coatings, is telling you something real. A brand that repeats "premium" and "body-safe" without specifics usually doesn't have the answer either.
